farmall m question

I just bought a farmall m and it seems very slow in 4th gear. I had one ten years ago that I thougt was faster then that in 4th so my question is were all the M tractors the same speed in 4th Its like its two slow in 4th and to fast in 5th. Mine is a 1941 thanks

yup, they are slow in 4th, and its quite a jump in 5th. the super m had a little bit faster gears, and a couple aftermarket companys came out with 9 speed conversions to give extra gears between 4 and 5th.

There was an optional 7 mph 4th gear attachment available for the M and the H. Maybe the M you had before had this attachment? It is also quite possible that because of worn parts in the engine governor, the engine is NOT reaching full rated RPMs.

They had akinds of tricks , Ive got one with picker low and a 7 mile 4th gear. That was my first tractor.It isnt running right now . It sat fore 20 years in the cattle shed . I was ambish one day this fall I put oil in plug holes on 4 tactors F30 that runs my m A w9 with 396 chevy . Well any way they all turn I still do not beleive it!!!
