It probably would not matter if you used a Behlen or a Charlynn. Which ever you choose, there is no need to use a dedicated power steering pump, just plumb the torque unit off the existing hydraulic pump with a priority valve.

I was in your situation ten years ago with my F-400. I went to the parts book to see what was required and how power steering differed from no power steering. I purchased the parts at a salvage yard.

If you don't have a parts book, goto to caseih.com and navigate your way to Farmall 400. I prefer the printed book.

You can also goto eBay and create a search by following this path:

Business & Industrial > Agriculture & Forestry > Antique Tractors & Equipment > Parts > Farmall

Create a search using "400 450 power steering" and let eBay email you when a listing gets posted. You will be better off to hold your bidding until a complete system is offered. You will know what a complete system is by consulting the parts book.

If you are in a hurry, do what Nebraska Kirk recommends. You will get nickeled and dimed by having to buy hoses, fittings, brackets, coupling, actuator, actuator mount, priority valve or belt driven PS pump, and misc.

You will probably find pictures on this site by going to "Parts and Pieces" link at the left side of your screen. Check "Tractor Photos" too.

You can also place a free "Classified Ad" by following the link to the left.

I don't know about Behlen, but Eaton (CharLynn) still makes a "torque generator", or at least they still did when I retired 7 years ago. TSC sells priority flow divider valves and a variety of hose lengths. My 240U has this set-up and the only problem I have is the pump on the 240 is small and when idled down, it is "jerky". The 400 has a bigger pump, so it should not be that way.

My Dad puts on a ford power steering pump on the front and drives it off the fan belt, this gets rid of the priority valve. now with the tractor idling I can spin the wheel as fast as I want with one finger. Please do yourself the favor as we have rebuilt to many priority valves to remember trying to solve this problem.
