What carb is on my A?

I need to rebuild the carb on my A. I can see the name "Zenith" on the side, but where do I look to find the model number? I see there are several different kits for Zenith carbs. Also, how do I know if I should get the basic or comprehensive kit?

If it hasn't been lost (and lot of them get that way over the years) you should be looking for a little tin tag under the head of one of the screws holding the bowl on, that will have a number stamped into it. If it's an original carb and the tag is there, it will start with 161X7.

They vary more between gas and distillate, but within each type they're fairly generic.

My experience with the "basic" kits is that it's kind of pot luck what will be in them. If you're rebuilding to fix a problem, I'd suggest getting the full kit.

So what do I do if the tag is gone? It is (or was) a distillate tractor. The carb has the drain cock and the main jet adjustment on it for a distillate tractor.

If you want to stick with that carb, you'll have to do a little shoppping around to find a good kit. The site here doesn't list one ofthe distillate carb.

I don't knowif CaseIHNHFord stocks them, but it would certainly be worth a toll-free cll to Bermuda Ken at Carter & Gruenewald, 1-866-FARMALL to find out.

Just a quick Google turned up

thecarburetorshop.com that lists both the carb and the kit. I know nothing about them, but it'd couldn't hurt to call to see what their kit includes.

The kits are out there for the distillate carbs, but you have to hunt for them.

Great, Thanks! I called the number you posted and talked to a very friendly guy. I think I've got it taken care of now.

You're welcome! Ken is kinda the guy a lot of us know, but he has some good guys working with him, too. CaseIH prices ain't cheap, and there are other very good sources for some of this stuff, but a dealer like C&G willing to keep the kind of parts we need and countermen who know their stuff is a real treasure.
