re push rod

The tappet screw was not loose. Maybe the valve was a little stuck in the valve guide. Is that possible? the man I bought it from said it ran good before. I do not know how long it sat when he started it again. I drove it 2 miles home and was ok then.

The nut could be tight but the tappet clearance could have been way off.

Are you familiar with how to adjust the tappet clearance?

yes I know the tappet was right on. the nut was not loose. I think the valve maybe got stuck in the valve guide amd let the push rod off the tappet. yes I know how to ajust the clearence.

Yes, that is entirely possible. I've experienced the same thing a time or two.
