Will the flywheel on an H come off without splitting tractor? Need to replace ring gear.
I'm thinking tractor must be split, but am not sure.Comments/suggestions appreciated.

I think in theory you could but it would be very difficult to remove something that heavy in such a confined area. Its been a while since I've done that to my H so maybe I'm wrong. Also if you are going to remove the flywheel you may want to think about the crank seal on that end of the engine. It has to have the flywheel removed and the oil pan - you would already be half way there.

I don't know if it will fit through the hole or not. The flywheel is very heavy and hard to manuever, the tractor is fairly easy to split. As noted you should probably replace the rear seal anyway.

Bruce - NO WAY the flywheel can be removed without splitting the tractor. The clutch disc and pressure plate assembly yes - but not the flywheel!

How once the flywheel is off changing the ring gear is straightforward:

Remove the old gear by heating it gently with a torch. (Doesn't need to be terribly hot - 300 deg is enough). Then quickly tap around the ring gear with a hammer before it cools - it will work right off.

Installing a new gear is even easier. "Bake" the new gear in a 400 deg oven at for a half hour. The hot gear will now fit easily onto the flywheel and shrink firmly into place as it cools.
