sleeve bores

Got the head off of my c291 and found each cylinder stamped with either a A, B, C, or D. This I am told is the size of the block bore. Can anybody tell me what the actual measurement for each letter should be? My local dealer hasnt been much help and was wondering if somebody had the information. According to the parts book the block is supposed to be stamped by the oil filter housing. This one is not. Thanks

I would measure the OD of old sleeves from each
bore or have the block measured. You don't want those sleeves loose in the bore as they may
slide down and the rod hit it causing a lot of damage. Hal

The sleeves in a C291 must the correct press fit. They are not held in place by the head gasket like the C221 and C263 but are a friction fit. They also need to be installed to the correct height above the block deck. They do not bottom in the counterbore in the block.

When my neighbor overhauled his gas 766, the 2 center holes took different sleeves, supposedly it was supposed to be stamped on the block near these 2 cylinders.

The bore size is stamped on block just above the oil filter base and it will read 1 or 2 or 3 and not letters. They are numbered in line front to rear. You can get sleeves that will fit a bore sized 1 or 2 or sleeves that will fit 2 or 3 supposedly. However, like previous poster said, they are to be a heavy press fit and you should use a installer plate that will limit their depth into bock, they are prone to crack if pressed in until they contact the flange on the sleeve. Oversize sleeves are available also in case they don't fit properly. Sleeving an engine is not always a piece of cake.
