m maximum tire width

i have a farmall m with the original rims, what is the widest tire i can put on them for more traction

A retired tire man said that the 15.5 X 38 will fit any rim that the 14.9 will go onto. The 14.9 has a more round sidewall and the 15.5s sidewall is straighter, allowing for a wider thread pattern.

you most likely have 10" rims on there. Stock tire size for the M being 12.4's. I have had 13.6s and 15.5s on a 10" rim before. The 13.6s look pretty good and perform well. The 14.9 or 15.5 are much to pinched on a 10. the tread is pinched to a point that it does not have all the cleat on the ground surface. And the overall look of the tire in my opinion is not very pleasing. I would go with the stock 12.4's or 13.6's or look for larger rims if you want a bigger tire.

My M has 13.6s on it. Neighbor has an M with 14.9s on it. Looks TERRIBLE.

From what I have seen some M's have 10's and some have 11's. You can go two (maybe three) inches larger than your rim. You CAN put anything on there so long as it will seat, but as stated your contact patch will suck.

I think 14.9/15.5's look sweet on an M, but not if you put them on a pizza cutter rim.
