Broken bolts, stripped threads, etc.

I've run across my fair share of these while restoring my Super C, but would like your input on this. Just got done rebuilding the touch control unit, and one of the bolts stripped the threads out of the unit while putting the head back on. I torqued them to approx 40# and one just let go, with another one suspect. What's the best fix - heli coil, re tap larger, or different?

Thanks. Doug

Ken sert Is the best that i have found for thread repir . Standard drill bit standard tap screw in with fingers use special toll that comes with the kit and set the locks and you are all done .

For the Cub, don't have the specs for the SC, but the book says 20-30 ft lbs, I doubt if the SC is different. I will usually use new bolts if suspect and run a tap in the holes. IF the bolt is not broken, you might still get by with tapping to the same size and using a new bolt.

Sounds like I put too much torque on them. I couldn't find any specs in my manuals (even the touch control one?). The threads in the unit stripped out. The bolt was fine. It seems like some thread inserts would be the way to go.

I've got a heavy torque wrench - goes over 200 lbs I think. Probably not accurate at these lower numbers. Next time I may just tighten by feel.

About 10 years ago, I bought a service manual for a Super A from Jensales, I did not know at that time they were low quality. I think where I found the spec was from a serviceman's guide as Jensales tends to lump stuff together. What you did is understandable. With a small bolt and a long-handled torque wrench, you don't feel the strain you are putting on that bolt. In that situation I would either use a combination wrench or at most a 1/2 inch drive ratchet until snug. I'm going to do the hyd reservoir on my SA pretty soon -- going to remember what you did as I tighten the bolts. The specs may be in the I&T manual -- mine is out in the shop. I did a C in 2002, only one I have ever done -- too long to remember if I used a torque wrench.

I would try a tap in the hole then use a new longer bolt. Sometimes more threads in the bottom of the hole the shorter bolt didn't use. Bernie Steffen
