Hey all. I have a 1939 M, I believe the serial number is FBK 5659, cant go outside and look right now, Im in afghanistan, I could use some parts for it and had a few questions about it. It has a 3 pt hitch on it, and I want to put the regular u-shaped drawbar on it, I think its called quick attach? I seen one listed on here for an H and was wondering if that would fit on the M. Also the trans top cover is broken off at the parking brake lock. So I dont have parking brakes. Does anyone have a good source for parts such as those? Also does anyone know of any good salvage yards in the middle TN, western KY area. I love walking around those places as much as trying to find parts. Alright, thanks in advance.

Hi JW,

Thanks for your service out there. I'm an active duty E-7 in the Navy, so know how much "fun" deployment can be.

I think you are thinking of "Fast hitch", and IIRC, the M/H didn't have it. The C did. You are wanting to switch from a 3-point to a regular "Draw bar". You should be able to sell that 3-point for enough money to finance it all when you get back. You can buy them new, but they cost a small fortune. You are much better off at the salvage yards. Same for the tranny cover. I'm a salvage fanatic. I've scoured for parts for my H, and have gotten some terrific deals. I hope someone can recommend some in your area.

Good luck, and come home safe!

Thanks for your efforts over there. We appreciate of course!Take a look on eBay.I got my H,M and MV complete this way for not that much.Only patience and await what they put on the "conveyor-belt"called eBay...
Shipping with UPS or USPS is mostly cheaper than drive around for hours the area...

These deployments are real "fun" but this one is done for me. I will be back with my family very soon.

On the hitch, I was thinking (not to sure) that they first came out on either the F12 or F20, and was called quick attach. I guess it doesnt matter what its called as long as it does it job :) I had considered selling the 3pt and I might, but Im a bit of a packrat, and dont let go of stuff the way I probably should, I throw stuff in the corner, well I will find something to use it for later. Well thanks for the quick reply.

First, Thanks for the service you and your fellow service members provide us in being able to have the good times and safety provided through the strength of our armed forces.
If you want to try salvage yards for your parts give JP's Tractor Salvage a try just west of the Mississippi River south of Fredericktown, MO. They salvage only IH tractors to my knowledge and have buildings full of IH parts. Their website is www.jptractorsalvage.com.
My 2 cents on the 3 point and a Farmall M is get rid of it. Those things make getting on a M a real chore as it is a rear entry tractor. They are better suited for tractors which you get on in front of the rear tires. If you have lots of 3 point implements and use them frequently then you will have to decide if the inconvience is worth it.
Thanks for serving and welcome back home, Hal.

I would keep the 3-point because if you sell it you'll want one later and if you keep it you could always put it back on. It makes the tractor more usable. You should think of what you may want to use it for later. If you plan to do any work you might want to hang on to it but if your gonna just show your tractor you could sell it and use the money to fix it in other areas.

Agree with some of the others about getting rid of the 3 point. As for the transmission cover, that could be a problem if you want to keep it original looking. 39s and very early 40s used a cover with a groove or notch under the seat. Don't know what the S/N break was but my 40M is S/N 115xx and has the flat top cover. Therefore you have less than 12000 tractors to choose from to get an original 39 top cover. If you don't care for the original look, then any M top cover will work.

For the drawbar, the H is too light and I thing too narrow also.

JW,
I could'nt agree more with Famallhal with regard to J.P Tractor. Good people to do business with and a great selection of parts.

If you need any reproduction parts, check out "O.E.M. Tractor Parts" (I've attached a link). The have quality parts and they stand behind them in my experience.

I have an extra hood for a '39 M. The '39 hoods were different from the hoods used on the balance of the Ms (no braces welded to the inside). If you need a hood to fix your tractor, look me up when you get back in the States and if I've still got it, I'll give it to you.

Thank you for serving over there. Keep your head down every chance you get.
