X5 Suffix on M Serial #

Ive misplaced my Farmall book,and I cant remember what the X5 On an M Farmall Serial # stands for.Can anybody hep me?hep me?Thank Ya !
 
If I remember correctly from this forum... the high alt pistons and head are actually higher compression, which can mean more HP at lower altitudes.

Please correct me if I am wrong with that.
 
That's what I looked at, too, Jim. The problem TFG is having is that the 5k gas is listed as X1B, the 5k kerosene is X3B, and the 5k distillate is X17A, so I'm not sure about what to say about what X5 means, and am wondering if something about some special gearing got left out in the publication -- the typesetting gets a little wonky for a couple of lines right at that point it my copy.
 
I jut checked in the Originality Guide, which has no typesetting issues and it says the same thing as the Data Book, so I'm asea with it.
 
OK, I see the ambiguity now. I don't have an M parts book handy, but looked in one for the W-6. It lists the X1 and X3 variants as you described. It lists X5 as 5K altitude with no aditional notes. There is no X17A in the list. Leads me to lean towards X5 being a 5K distillate engine. TFG needs to look for distilate parts when he looks at the tractor!

Maybe the X17A was used at a different time than the X5. The book I checked is from 12/1/47.
 
Thanks for the research.Serial # places it as a 1941 model if Im correct.Kinda interesting and has the old factory wide with duals on it.I know a few folks dualled the M's up for disking,but its kinda rare to find one left like that,must have been disking the last time it quit.Hope I can get ahold of the guy.
 
This M has duals on it,but the rear tires are 8.00-44 inch rear rubber.Ive also never seen that.Its not a high crop,just weird.Maybe someones homemade special application
 
Think you are correct Jim, checked this in the past and TC 28 F is the first M parts book that shows code X17A. From what I remember the previous manuals show no code for distillate. TC28F was printed in the early fifties.
 
If I'm reading that right, it's starting to sound as if his motor started life as a 5,000 ft distillate. Who knows what's been done in the meantime.
