Farmall A Tire Size

Does anyone know the correct original size for the rear tires and rims on a farmall model A? I am doing a restoration. The tires currently on it are 8.3 x 24 and the rims are 8 x 24. The tires say on them that they should be mounted on a 7" rim. The parts section of this website lists 9 x 24 rims for a Farmall A. That rim size would require a larger tire, I assume. Any help with this mess would be appreciated.

correct tire size for the A is 9.5's. the rims and tires you have are off a Cub from the sounds of it

millertire.com used to (and may still have) a page discussing how tire size nomenclature has changed over the years.

As far as what was stock/correct, take your pick. 8/9/10 and even 11 inch rims were all available, with tires to fit them. It would depend on what, if anything, was actually ordered by a dealer. In the absence of a specific order, i.e., just building tractors to ship out to dealers, it may well have varied with their experience with the market they planned to ship to. In my experience, (Ohio and east) most of what I see (with a few exceptions) are 8" rims with what is now called a 9.5" tire.

My cub has 7 inch rims on it, i just bought new ones becasue im restoring it. By a and B have 9 inch rims on them now I think.

The '45 A I'm working has 8" rims and like new 9x24 Wards Riverside tires {replacements). I've had the tractor stored 26 years.

How did you measure the rim. If you measure outside to outside the rim will be 1inch smaller so a 7in rim will measure 8 overall. The tires you now have will be as close to the original. I have two sets of 8.3s and the fit good on the 7in rim and the 9.5s on the 8in rims also are qgood fit

As ScottyHOMEy said you could get them with 8,9 or 10 inch rims but you might want to consider what you're going to be using the tractor for. I've got a couple of A's with 11.2x24 tires on I think 9" rims and one with 9.5x24 tires on 8" rims. For work that requires really slow speeds, the smaller 9.5x24 tires on 8" rims are the way to go. With the taller tires the tractor speed is increased enough to make tasks requiring really slow ground speeds difficult. The taller tires will work better for tractors rides though.
