Just rebuilt my engine put it all together with new head gasket. Head was milled so it is flat. Just noticed coolant coming up from around the head bolts under the valve cover. Any ideas why that might be before I pull the head back off...Everything was checked and rechecked before putting it together. This has me puzzled??

did you have the block milled too? That may have messed the surface mating up....is there water in the oil as well?

you dont say what the engine is but on some engines the studs go right into a water jacket. in this case a thread sealer is recomended to prevent leakage.just remove the problem stud coat it with rtv or like theread sealer and replace stud. make sure to retorque the nut after doing this. Retorque the entire head when the engine is brought up to temp.

Engine from a '49 Super A. So do I just use sealant on the bolts and threads.Never saw any info about that in my shop manual.

yes that engine has studs that go right into the water jacket. as for a thread sealant just on the stud in the block will do. no need to put any on the nut beacuuse colant will not be there when the stud theads are sealed. iv used napa high tak gasket and thread sealer, also red rtv works as well.

I"m draining the coolant now. I will use sealant and see if that solves the problem. Just wish the old shop manual would have said something about it. I just about have it memorized from reading it so much. Just checked again. No mention of it.... Thanks to all for helping me in such a speedy fashion. Was hoping to crank it on Wed for the first time and seeing that scared me to death. Wondering what I did wrong after trying to be so carefull...

Mine did that too. You can pull the stud without pulling the head off again.

Did you say coolant got up there without the engine ever running?
