IH 504 Utility PTO

Had a little bad luck with my stump grinder, bit off a little more that it should chew, slip clutch on pto shaft did not slip when it was supposed to. I heard a breif grinding sound from the engine clutch area, then everything went on to work just fine. Used it yesterday with wood chipper,no problems,no new noises, lucky I guess?
My question is,what goes first, the splines on the PTO input shaft,or the females splines in the pressure plate? I put a clutch in it last year but did not replace the pressure plate, looked too good but the splines in the pressure plate were worn some. Any ideas??????
Thanks,Butch

Most likely the splines on the pressure will fail first because there is less material to wear away. The hardness may be at a lower value as well.

However, if it comes to a stripped pressure plate spline, you will need a new IPTO driving gear and shaft. That is the peice you called the input gear.

The good news is that there are some eBay sellers that have that gear listed. They have it titled as a 460 part but I think it may be the same part as used on the 504. You will have to compare part numbers at CaseIH.com. Price should be around $100. Might be an 80% discount from an CaseIH dealer price.

Thanks for help. Wengers has the imput shaft (used) for $148. If I have split it I will try to find a new shaft to prevent future problems.
Thanks ,Butch

The eBay gears I mentioned are new. I suspect they are new old stock as opposed to aftermarket.

Search under "IPTO" after you get to Antique tractors/parts/Farmall. They will be at the bottom of the page.

I would go for new as most used shafts will have wear showing on the splines even if the IPTO was never used. It's a non lubricated joint. An old shaft running
in a new pressure plate hub will wear faster than all new parts.

I will check that out,as I use the pto a lot it seems crazy to use a used gear if a new one is availble. Good advice, Thanks.
