686 questions

I am working on a late 686 with the german engine and I have a couple of questions.

1) There is a hole under the tractor in line with the hyd filter that spits oil every now and then. any idea what I am looking at here? There are no threads in the hols so I am assuming its a vent of some sort?

2) Tractor has an aftermarket loader and the are feeding the loader valve off of one of the remotes in the back. This is ok, except if you want down pressure off the loader, then it pops the detent on the remote valve. Is there anyplace a can tap into the hyraulics and run direct to the loader valve?

Thanks for all the help
Don

Hey Don,

The hole is indeed avent or drain. You have some seals leaking in the TA. The hole is there to keep the TA clutch which is in a dry compartment from getting oil soaked. It would seem that it is not leaking severely. If so, I would RUN it, keep a close check on the hyd/tran fluid, and replace the seals whenever it starts leaking severely or it needs to be split for some other reason. Ran a 656 like that for over 20 yrs.

As for the hydraulics, CIH had at one time a power beyond block that bolted on to the outside of the remote valve stack. It was primarily for the big frame tractors and I am not sure if you have enough clearance to mount it. Pretty spendy if it is even still available. Have heard of an aftermarket one but do not know where to find one.

I dont think you can use a power beyond valve on a 686 .I also have a late model 686 with a 310 engine in it. The best thing you can do is just tie the handle back so it doesnt pop out.Thats what i did with mine. Also a bungee strarp is cheap. Erik..

For the ultimate performance from your factory pump, look for Charles Todd's 504 power beyond project.
I would copy his method 95%. that tractor is about 70% the same as a 686 for this discussion. I think the 656/66/86 already have the 17gpm pump, so larger plumbing out of the pump to a new larger flow divider (giving priority to your steering) then your new power beyond valve stack, then to your existing remotes and you are set. you will lose some pretty-ness of the tractor because the factory setup is neat and clean, but hides the priority valve under the dash where there is no room to upgrade. Alternatively, you could put a power beyond valve stack in between the output of the flow divider valve and the current remote valve, but I think the stock equipment between the pump and remotes is restrictive and the stock locations do not give you a lot of physical space for modifications, although cutting the cowl panels may help.

I also think you could modify an IH-type power beyond plate to work on a 686 with enough motivation and creativity, but the original IH plate looks like there will be interference with your 3 point hitch control quadrant and your plumbing will get too close to the fender at narrower tread settings. you also will need an additional open-sided valve casting to install the plate.

never say never, but it can take lots of $$$ or time.

This might be to late but if you read this i just remembered that when i had a loader on my 686 i changed the bypass valve just behind the seat and easy to do. The 686 valve is 1800 pounds and i changed it to an 886 valve and it is 2000 or 2200 pounds and it made a real difference in the loader. It would lift a lot more and made it a real loader .Thanks Erik..
