pulley preservation

I just picked up a belt pulley for my new M and the pulley is made out of wood or pressed paper. It is in fair shape. I bolted it up and took a 180 grit sand block to it to smooth it out and level out some of the gouges. I was going to paint it and call it good, but is there anything else I can do to protect it to keep it from weathering away?

hardwood floor oil. you dont want paint on the driving surface as the belt will slip off on start ups.

i use polyurethane sealer. the belt doesn't slip with this painted on the pulley.
