What does the W stand for? This is serial number is from a 1948 W-6.

The W stands for wheatland

Same thing X1 stands for on a farmall M. On a W6 its W1. Means the tractor was manufactured to use gasoline only fuel.

Actually, the W in the decal on the hood stands for wheel, and T stands for track in the crawlers. The wheatland designation came later. The question was about the W suffix after the serial number on the serial tag.
