? about fixing up Super M motor

I have a farmall Super M a freind wants me to overhaul the engine just for farm and show. I would like to know what are some things I can do to bump up the power a little. We checked on fire creaters. We are going to send the cam off to get reground Don't know if stock or power grind? Would a set of 400 or 450 pistons work or to much machine work? Let me know some options!!
 
Well with out getting preverted or kinky and with out a ton of money spent . This is what i woulld do as i have done this several times before and had vary good results . A set of 8500 ft. high alt. pistons a good valve job and C C ing the head a balance job on all rotating members a STOCk 450 cam grind a little carb tweeking a 450 gas manifold a little dist tweeking a little fine tuning of the gov. and i think you will be really happy but some of the local bnoys at the local pulls may not .
 

Put the 450 kit in ! It will take you from 264 to 281 cu inch. Leave the stock cam in there it works fine.

Spend the money on the cylinder head this is ware you will get your gains.

I put a good 281 together a few years back with the stock cam and had it in the 70s on hp.

I run a dyno service so these #s are accurate. Don't go over 1800 rpm , you run out of cam.

The only real differance i made was a 450 "gas" head because it gave higher compression.

Make the normal improvments like a good "hot" coil , rebuild the distribuator with light springs to get the advance in fast. [ chevy springs]

Set timing with digital timing light with tach in it, go for highest rpm when setting timing.

A good rebuild on carb,"NOT SOME TRACTOR SUPPLY REBUILD KIT" a factory rebuild kit or send it out.

Keep it simple but pay attention to detail.
Gasket match everything.

If you find a 450 head there are a few small changes to be made in order to use it. You will be asking them when you go to hook things up.
