International SA

My son & I are getting the tractors ready for this years Christmas Parade. Our SA is acting "funny", occassionally, when starting in any gear, it will "bog" down...switch to any other gear & all will be fine & you can switch back to gear you first chose. Like I said, it does this every now & again, not everytime. I gave it a good going over & I don"t see anything wrong. Tractor is barn kept & I don"t see any evidence of mice nests anywhere (such as clutch housing)...any ideas? thanks

Somewhere in the trans or an axle there is a needle bearing getting crosswise on its races. Or it is getting stuck in two gears at once from a worn shifter lever tip. JimN

Is this common? Will this likely correct itself w/ a little run time? This is not one of our work tractors, we use it occassionally to pull a wagon & mostly for local parades (might see 20hrs a yr of use)...still, we religiously change all the fluids once a yr (motor oil/gear lube/ antifreeze flush)...I just did the yrly service, I use Napa 80-90W for gear lube....is this harmful to run in current condition ...or is it no big deal? One in gear, it runs 100%...thanks

Jim,
Never thought that a worn needle bearing would do this but, yes, this may certainly happen. Thanks for your insight.
In a Super A transmission and rear end, however, there are no needle bearings that I know of. There is a roller bearing at the differential end of the transmission countershaft (the output shaft of the transmission). (The other bearings are ball bearings.) Could a roller bearing (with cylindrical rollers) also jam?
Thanks, Hendrik.

What do you mean by "bog down"? Has trouble moving or is locked up solid and won't move at all? Two totally different symptoms caused by totally different problems.

What do you mean when you say bog down does the engine slow or what. You arent getting in two gears at the same time or it would lock the rear wheels. There isnt any needle bearing in that tranny so you must have an engine problem maybe your throttle linkage has a problem.

By "bogg" down, I mean the tractor won't move, "feels" like I'm trying to pull something really heavy...but, like I say, put in any other gear & it takes right off & I'm always able to shift back to 1st gear that gave me trouble.

does it kill the engine when you let the clutch out that would mean you are in two gears at the same time which can be caused by a bad shifting lever or bad forks in the tranny.

I have a 46 A and it does the same thing. Pulled the top cover off and stuck in two gears. I am careful to use the H pattern to shift now till I get time to fix the Forks.
