1930 Farmall regular

ACN

New User
Hello currently in the process of restoring a 1930 farmall regular. Having a hard time finding any info on these and a good parts source. Any advice about them or where to find more parts please let me know

do you have any pictures of how yours turned out and where it was when you started?

ACN, at this time i am have a hard time uploading pictures. but i will tell you what mine involved. I rebuilt it for a gentelman in town whos grandfather bought in new in 1930. The tractor had sat for many years and had become stuck. I was able to get the engine unstuck pretty easy. had the head sent out and that ended up being bad, got anouther one from alderson. I also had to get a new manifold. the cylinders were in good shape with no groves or scores in them so i got away with a hone adn re-ring. i used plasti (sp) gauge on the crank and adjusted the mains and rods accodingly. (the manins and rods are shimed on this engine) I also had to put in a new clutch. They are also know to have the clutch stick if they are not moved every so often. thats about all the main things that i replaced on it. i had never worked on a F series before, but with a manual and alittle know how it was not to bad to get her all back together and running again. youll deff need a manual, at least the I&T

The good thing about Rice Equipment is that Gordon Rice is familar with old Farmalls and can give you advice on how to install the parts your are ordering.

(quoted from post at 21:11:46 11/25/09) Andrew Z, Since when are the mains shimmed on this engine?? They were, are, and always will be ball bearings.

Mike, if they were anyhting like the mains on my W-30 Orchard, you could fit a few shims in them...................they were completely shot

Where Are you located?
A gentleman I knew (He has passed away) has 6 running Farmall Regulars sitting at his farm. He told me he had rebuilt all six. He had many extra parts hanging in his barn. I plan to speak with his widow to see what she plans to do with the parts and tractors.

only rods are shimmed. thats why it has the round inspection covers on the side of the block.the crank runs on only two ball brgs, one on front and one at rear.

thanks mike, i forgot that the 2 mains were ball bearing. i was thinking of a allis B that i was doing at the same time its been some time

the anouther reason there are inspection holes on the sides, it is to remove the pistons from below without taking off the head. I tried putting them back in that way and i gave up and went from the top down like normal.

thats the only way you get the pistons out. the end of the rod is larger than the sleeve is round. this is the case on all pre 39 engines

Don't mean to pry in, but heres some pics of the progress I've made on my Regular. When I picked it up the engine was loose, missing the carb, wrong magneto on it and it was flipped around. When I pulled the head I found the sleeves were not in the best shape, they were rather worn out, and the #4 piston was missing the entire skirt on the bottom. So I ended up getting better pistons and sleeves out of a parts tractor I also acquired along with some other parts for it from the same friend.

Anyways here are some pictures of the progress I have made so far

Thanks for the pics, very interesting, but I do NOT understand that clutch!! I grew up "on" a regular (I'm 61) on our small family place. Used to scoot my butt up on the seat, and clamp my legs around the wheel to hang on. Dad put a flywheel on the coupler between the engine/ trans and added an old Ford starter, gen, lights, and belt drive pump with a real nice snow plow. That same blade--with some damage--was in use up to about 10 yrs ago on another tractor.
