Farmall A - rebuiding eng.

I plan to rebuild my A engine this winter - it runs great but puffs a lot of blue smoke and has some oil in the antifreeze.
I plan to replace the rings, hone the cylinders, and do a valve job.
I'm hoping the new gaskets wil take care of the minor oil problem.
For the rings, are Hastings still the way to go? Its been a while since I've done a complete tear down.
Anything else to watchout for with this engine?

I think I would install a new sleeve/piston kit& new sleeve seals. Have the crankshaft measured fo wear & have new valve guides installed if it needs them and have them magna-fluxed the head. You can get a sleeve kit off this forum for about $303.00. Hal
PS: Doing that it will last a long time and you increase the cylinder bore to 3.125" without any machining.

If you do a half job and get away with it, all well & good.
But if you go to the trouble of tearing it apart, hone the cylinders and put rings on worn pistons, in worn sleeves and it doesn't solve the problems, you will have wasted a great deal of time and money. And you will not be happy with it, or yourself.

I suggest that you re-think this. Do the complete job, new sleeves, pistons, rings, seals, gaskets, bearings, everything. You will never be sorry that you did it right.
