found a pto for a m, doesn't have a hydraulic pump
the person said i could hook in to the pump on the tractor but it is an older m. what is the best way to get live hydraulics for my loader, the m has to be in gear to lift. thx pheel

What does the PTO have to do with anything? Are you talking about a PTO driven hydraulic pump? Bc that would work, but you are back to the same problem if you don't have live power.
The best fix is to put live hydraulics on the tractor. The stuff to do it is everywhere, just not too cheap.

This is how I did it. Used a pump off of a 400 gasser.

Ran a hydraulic auger the other day to fill a wheat truck. Works as good as any of the newer tractors, so I'm sure it would certainly run a loader.

There is live hydraulic pump for the M, and that is the way to go. Got one with mine and fellow that I got it from still complains about selling me that pump with the tractor. Of course he doesn't get any sympathy from me, cause I love that set up.

so this is the kind that goes in front of the distributor, it looks like the return is on the original hyudrolic pump, and the feed is on the bottom, is on the drain plug or on the front hook
up you can just see it at the top of the photo

Here is another approach. This live pump runs off the crankshaft with another two groove pulley installed in front of the fan belt pulley. The pump can be turned on/off with a switch mounted on headlight bar.

neither the pto or hydraulics work if the clutch is pushed in, i have an old charlyn pump, i was considering putting it on the front on the m, but it seems that i should sell it and put the one on on the distributor

Yep, same deal as mine is.

They are using the original as a reservoir. You'll need to expand that to have enough oil for a loader though. They only hold about a gallon and a half.

pheel,

The charlynn pump will NOT work on the front of the tractor. It is designed to run at 540RPM. The engine runs at 1800RPM. It will ruin the pump.

You need a distributor-driven live hydraulic pump. It is not cheap, about $800 for the pump. You may need to change out the front engine cover on your M too, because they changed them in 1950 to fit the live pump. The live pump will not fit on an older M.

Rather than mess around with the belly pump as a reservoir, I recommend mounting a hydraulic oil tank around 3-5 gallons somewhere on the tractor.
