Vee belt question.

I have an M that has an add-on vee belt driven pump to power the power steering. The pump is mounted on the left side up near the front hood latch, and was driven buy a single long vee belt (now broken) that ran from the crank pulley up around the fan pulley and then out to the hydraulic pump. It appears - by eyeballing- that the belt only engaged each pulley about 1/3 of its diameter. Is this sufficient belt contact for the crank pulley to drive the fan and the hydraulic pump? Your opinions-please. And thank you.

It is not ideal, but the less it contacts the harder that contact is in terms of pressure per sq inch of belt contact. It should be OK. Jim

You are welcome. It takes a shallow angle of approach and departure (like 15% contact) for the pressure to be reduced if they are at near equal corners of a almost equilateral triangle, they will be fine. Jim

Like Jim says it should work fine.

On the Farmall M-based Trojan "Utility Speed Patrol" graders, a similar setup was employed. An extended length belt drove a live pump that operated the grader's hydraulics.

It apparently worked well as many Utility Speed Patrol graders were built.
