loud magneto

I have noticed that the magneto on my m has gotton really loud lately. I don't remeber it ever being this noisy. At an idle, the clacking noise coming from the magneto can be cleary heard over the sound of the engine. Is this an indication of a problem that needs to be addressed?

Sounds like you are idleing to slow or your impulse coupling is engaging - weak or broken spring.

Is it a clack or a snapping sound? If the latter it may be a spark jumping. Make sure your wires are in tight.

Maybe.
If your M is idles down to the point that is is just ticking over (maybe 350 RPM) (most Ms can be set this low if just right on carb and the timing is set a little late. (this causes a mag equipped tractor to run better at idle because most mags of that era have no advance mechanism after starting.)
At this slow speed, the mag impulse coupling will not latch out of play. as a result it will continue to wind and release, making the clacking noise. The noise is normal if the idle is slow.
If the idle is in the 5 to 600 RPM range, there may be issues with the weights and release mechanism in the mag impulse coupling. Do not let it do this, it will destroy the mag (opinion) JimN
