Muffler finish

I have an original IH muffler. It had some light surface rust, so I gently wire wheeled it, and it cleaned up well. But the surface is a little rough. I was wondering what I can do to protect it. Do folks paint it, or something else?

Try to find some high temp paint, such as "hamered steel" it looks just like the rear rims, should look quite nicely on a muffler also. can usually find in the paint section at any auto parts store

Napa has header paint in rattle cans. It works real well. It comes in alumninum and if you follow the direction it will last for a very long time and it looks GOOD Bob

I've had excellent luck with Plasticote "hi temp aluminum" from a rattle can. Apply and cure per directions it will easily last 2 - 3 years if the tractor is stored inside.

If stored outside or the tractor is worked hard (so the muffler gets really hot) it'll need to be resprayed more frequently.

Mike,

You are so lucky.

Spray an entire can of high temp paint inside the muffler (from both ends). I have had good luck with that helping to keep the insides from rotting out. The muffler on my H is 15+ years old and looks fine (except where the silver paint is burnt off the outside).
