Farmall 100, engine questions, possible coolant in oil

I just dragged home a Farmall 100. I'm not sure if it has coolant in oil or maybe just a LOT of condensate. I'll be changing the oil/ filter/ coolant, don't have a shop manual yet.

What are the possible routes for coolant to oil contamination?

cracked block, obviously

head gasket?

Is this a wet sleeve engine?

Any other passages/ suspicious failures for this problem?

Coould be all the things you said. The block is a wet sleeved so its possible the "O" rings at the bottom of the sleeve are leaking. Best thing to do would pull the oil pan and look up sometimes you can see rust streaking where it is leaking from. If not then fill the rad. back up and look for driping.

It is wet sleeve with Large cross section O rings at the spigots into the crank case. They can and do leak. there are also possible internal cracks and welch plugs that can rust through, (head gasket as well. I would say if it is leaking coolant put a pressure checker on it and pull the pan to see where it is getting into the bottom end. A good light and a rain cap to suit will do it. JimN

Condensation can build up more water in the crankcase than you might suspect.

If you've got anti-freeze in your coolant, the color would be the giveaway as to whether it's condensation or a cross-leak somewhere.

It is a wet-sleeve motor, so leakage around the O-rings at the bottoms of the sleeves is another possibility in addition to the head gasket or cracks in the block or head.

I've never had one of the smaller IH engines apart but they do have wet sleeves with o-ring seals. They are certainly a leak path along with the other items you mentioned. I will let the small tractor folks with more knowledge and experience then I have answer for any other areas which might be a possible leak path in your 100, Hal.

i recently had the same problem with a 1086, i took the oil pan off and you can look up at the sleeves and see where the leak is. jim7

Thanks. Since I dont know the history, I'm going to gamble and change the antifreeze (unknown mixture) and the oil/ filter.

The rad shows signs of a sealer, so unknown if this was used because of this problem, or whether the rad itself was leaking.

This has "some kind" of front loader on it that makes all this a real PITA

Hope I didn't pay too much for this thing!!

A picture, just for fun

The front loader is going to be a huge PITA. You can't do ANYTHING through all that framework. First thing I did yesterday with some scrap tubing is build a double forked prop to capture the loader/ frame tubing to prop it up safely. Even then the cylinders are in the way, but I could unhook the front link if I have to.

Could be a sleeve leaking around the seal. You can drop the oil pan & apply 2 or 3 pounds of air pressure to the radiator and look for any drips around those sleeve seals. I would run the tractor for awhile and keep a close check on the oil to see if it contains antifreeze. Look in the radiator with the engine at an idle for any bubbles. Could be a cracked head or blown headgasket if bubbles are present. Hal

After changing fluids if you still think you are getting oil into the coolant you need to remove pan and look with a good lite at each sleeve you will be able to see the cooland at the bottom of the sleeve if thats where it is coming from. This mite take a few days for the coolant to appear. Nest would be the head gasket. You should see coolant in the oil when you drain if you will let the tractor set for a few days before draining as it will collect in the drain plug and you will see when you remove the plug. Sometimes it is hard to find just where the leak is coming from. It sounds like you dont know just think you have a leak so dont get too upset just now as you will find the leak.

Well today I drained some of the antifreeze, dumped in one fresh gallon, and dumped in the old stuff on top, so it's that much stronger.

Changed the oil and filter, and got probably 2 hrs total run time diddlin' around, and greased it. Hasn't seen a grease gun in 40 years.

So far, on the short time I've run it, there's no evidence of any more "stuff" in the oil.

I also dug out my old Meyers snow blade off the old Landcruiser, and figured out how to swap it for the bucket. Might have that done by Wednesday if the wx holds.
