450 LP Revisited

I talked to the owner of the 450 and he said it runs fine. The low side of the TA is out.(Surprise) He wants $2500 for it. I went and looked at it and the only thing wrong with the tin is surface rust. One small dent on the grill. Live PTO, no 3 point and he does have the 2 wheel axle for the front also. Rear tires are good, the front one is missing some tread but is holding air. The seat and battery box are good. (again surprise) Not sure about the $2500, though. By the time I replaced the TA and the other small stuff, I'd have $4000 in it. Not sure it's worth it. What do y'all think? Dan

I don't see a problem with the price. The head and manifold are worth half of his asking price. Alot of 450 LP tractors have been scrapped for those parts by the puller crowd. The LP model has to be approaching rarity by now even in Texas. It certainly is in New England. I'll bet that tractor would draw some attention on eBay without having to do any repairs

Those F and H wheel weights might have some value that exceeds IH weights. For me the only drawback is the absence of the fast hitch but that can be corrected for a couple of hundred dollars.

$4000 including repairs for a what appears, by your pics and description for a fairly original 450 LP? You"ve got both front ends, and it looks like it has all the emblems and what-not intact. If all you wanted to was make it pretty and show it off, it"d be worth it. $4000 for a pretty 50 hp tractor seems like a bargain to me, even if you wanted to work it. You can"t spend $4000 and get anything close to this. Not, at least, in my humble opinion.

I"m sure there"s 40-50 other guys that would love to have that tractor.

It looks like it has power steering, lots of good items to sell if it was parted.Got to remember it in one piece and there are fewer every day.Scott

Sounds like a good buy to me. And remember to keep it lookin that good you've got to keep it outside! Good show tractor you found.

Looks too good to pass up. I would drive it for an hour or so to get a feel for its oil pressure etc, but al LP engine is going to last, and be less problematic than a gasser. JimN

Wll Guys, I can't thank you enough for all your advice. Your opinions are very important to this novice. I'm going to call the guy back tomorrow and see if we can drive it a little like Jim suggested. If all is well, I'm going to bring her home. Already got the go ahead from the Mrs. (bless her heart) I'll holler back when I get her home. Dan

May want to make sure it has the original type 450 head before spending that much. You can reach up under hood and feel head above manifold to tell.

In the space between valve cover and and edge of head on manifold side you should feel dips or pockets above and between intake and exhaust ports. most times with oil or crap in them on well used machines. All other heads are pretty flat between the head bolt studs on that side.

Well what are you waiting for? Drive it around and see if the trans is quiet!

Yep, this is the one I was trying to find out about but didn't have any luck. GRRRRR!

Glad to see it may be finally finding a home!

Great job, Stew. I'm going to put this pic on my desktop for inspiration. This is exactly what I envisioned it to look like. Thanks, Dan...

Here's my '58 450LP after finishing fitting the sheet metal. Now I'm in the process of stripping, filling, priming, and sanding the last 6 sheet metal pieces. I'm a few months from finishing.

Thanks for the pic, Marty. I can already tell she's gonna be beautiful. There's just something about the way the LP tank sits up there that just makes these models really stand out. I look forward to more pics when you finish with it.

does anydody know where I can get a couple of valve covers for a 400 lp tank, I need two covers for the side over the filler valves??
