Super C Starter Drive

The starter began sticking on my Super C some time ago. I finally removed it and used some wd40 on the shaft. The gear is fairly worn. I reassembled and now, the starter is not sticking; however, it now will grind once or twice before it finally takes hold. I believe it is time for a new starter drive as the gear is worn.

I found 2 types: a ratchet style and the regular style. It looks as if the ratchet style somehow fits on the existing shaft. Is this the case?

Should I order the ratchet style or the regular style?

I converted the tractor to 12V some time ago. Is there anything to consider due to the system now being 12V instead of 6?

Thanks for any help.

Before you do anything with the starter you better turn the engine over slow and inspect the teeth on the flywheel. Using 12v with bad drive and ring gear messes everything up. Bet a big steak the ring gear is also toast. It wont help to replace drive as the bad spot will just get worse then another drive will be needed. You can just take the ring gear off and reverse and install if the teeth arent too far goneas lots have been don3 that way.

I got told by a reputable starter shop that 12 volts on a "light duty" 6- volt application will spin the starter too fast to engage the splines every time. This was on the pony engine on a Cat 112 motor grader. However, our SMTA has been doing well on a 12- volt system. This would be a "heavy duty" application??? Who knows. Our SC is still 6- volt & does very well.

Go with the different drive, (and a Gene indicates) if the teeth are bad on the flywheel (more than 1/4 depth worn away back to front) I would consider changing it also. JimN

The problem with Super C starter drives are directly related to a worn ring gear on the flywheel. Flip the ring gear or get a new one and your starter drive problems will go away.

Thanks. I"ll take a look at the ring gear. It only started grinding after I pulled the starter off to fix the sticking gear problem. Kind of strange. It never did the grinding before that point. Not sure what changed to start the grinding issue all of a sudden.
