Hi, been a regular on the deere board, and crossed over to purchase my first Farmalls. Still will have Deeres, but realize Farmall tractors are great tractors. So with the purchase of a 1935 F-12 with full steel (motor loose), and 1929 Regular full steel (locked up tight), I will need some assistance with you great Farmall men as I dig into this F-12 first. Please accept me in your loyal Farmall forum, and glad to be here. (I know this board will be more friendly, lol.) |

In central NJ, where I grew up, IHC dealers were never very far away. IH tractors were everywhere, probably more because of the nearness of the dealers than because of any inherent superiority of the machines. This is not to say they weren't high-quality machines. My father's 10-20 labored for 22 years before he replaced it with an H, and his F-12 probably about that long, too. They were still working, but he wanted something a little more modern and bought the H (he let the others sit out until they were junk; I wasn't interested in keeping them 60 years ago, but now I shed a tear whenever I think about those noble beasts going to waste). Neither of these tractors ever required repairs, except for a fuel-pump diaphragm on the F-12--a normal occurrence on any fuel pump in the 40s, after several years of pumping away. I think IH was a little slow to innovate, possibly because they sold so well. Most were not all that comfortable until the letter-series came out ("like driving a car" was the way a cousin put it after replacing his rough-riding, noisy beast of an F-20 with an H).

TOOT, Get a good start your best parts suppler for pre 39' Farmalls are Rice equipment, Fordson house, Aderson tractor They are all on the web. If the regular has been stuck for long time Pull the head and soak with AFT and tapp pistons with wood block and hammer. most likely you will have to pull pistons to clean and inspect rings. I have brought 5 regulars back to life over the years. Oldiron29

Welcome! I'm not sure if the Regular motor can be freed depending on how long it's been rusted stuck. But it wouldn't hurt to pour some ATF in the cylinders now, to let it soak while you work on your F-12.

Some of the Deeres were great, but you started with the oldest of the Farmalls, when you get to 1939 and above then parts are better available. Those Mid 30's models whether Deere or IH you will have a lot of problems getting parts for. Good luck.

Welcome to the Red side! Some of my best friends drive Green. However, your F-12 & Regular will be McCormick Gray.
