I recently purchased a WD 9 McCormick Deering..I did not get my manual in the mail yet..Can someone tell me how to start up and shut it down properly thanks...

Start on gas and run long enough to warm it up adequately to switch over to diesel. This will be almost instant if it's already warm, otherwise 2-3 min (whenever you're running on gas the starting valves receive little to no cooling and the longer you run the hotter they get). Then on diesel gently warm it into work.

For shut down, idle on diesel for 15 min or so after hard work until it's as cool as it can get still running. Then switch it back to gas and after a minute or so shut it down (I normally just turn the gas off and let it run out). Once the engine stops turning switch it back to diesel to let the starting valves cool on the head.

Hope that helps, Sam

One reason IH wanted them shut off on gas was to help with starting in cold weather or back when some hand crank started them. After a long day of use enough oil could pass the starting valve stems to puddle above valve in the spark plug chamber.
They wanted the plugs cleared off while engine was hot for the next start.
I don't claim to know which way is best to shut them off, just posting a reason.
