John T. or anyone ( H causing TV interference)

We cannot watch TV if I have my H running anywhere close to the house(we use a tv antenna). I have a pertronix ignition, solid copper plug and coil wires, autolite 3116 plugs(non-resistor I think) and a 12 V alternator. Do you have any suggestions how I can eliminate this problem?

Swap the solid copper plug wires RF surpression "resistor" wires. Don't forget the coil wire!

If that's not enough replace the 3116 plugs with a set of resistor plugs (Autolite 388 or equiv).

Unlikely the alternator is causing the problem. Most alternators are equipped with an internal RF capacitor for this purpose. However there's no harm in adding an auxiliary capacitor on the alternator output. Go to the parts store or Radio Shack and ask for a "car radio static capacitor".

Incidentally I experience the same problem with the TV (also AM radio...) whenever a couple different Harley motorcycles roll by on the street. They make their presence known 200 - 300 yards away.

When daughters were still at home, they would be watching their best soap opra with my wife and I would start an old 22-36 and drive it close to the living room just to blip the tv, they never knew what was going on, I would watch them through the window and their heads would be nodding with the blip.-mike

I pretty much agree with my friends below.. YOU HAVE TOO MUCH NON RESISTOR (plugs) NON SUPPRESSOR (plug wires) STUFF GOING ON THERE.

Its ESPECIALY important in Magneto ignition applications that solid wire core wire is used because the mag has such low energy to begin with one doesnt want to waste any heat energy in the wires. HOWEVER its less important in coil distributor ignitions especially that pertronix has plentyyyyyyyy of energy available such that some wasted in a resistor plug or carbon core suppressor wires isnt gonna hurt you all that much.

I generally prefer wire core and non resistor plugs BUTTTT if it casues serious TV problems then one (esp if its a coil ignition) may have to have an attitude adjustment.

Id just try a good set of suppressor wires or 388 resistor plugs (3116 are non resistor).......

Pertonix warns not to use copper wires on several versions of their kits (I don't know what version you have). That because of RF interference.

I'm curoius though - are you having problems on digital TV channels or analog?

There are several brands of magnetic suppression wire that is not resistor, but suppresses noise by winding the conductor in a spiral. I use them and they do not degrade the spark. Try it. JimN

It doesn't do much good to turn the tractor off when the power is out and the tractor is running a pto generator. I'm not the one that is usually wanting to watch TV its the wife and that makes a big difference. Keep the wife happy and it makes for a happy home.

Ive seen them, Pertronix offers a set I believe, the conductors are spiral wound as you indicate and I think in some ultra high energy systems (not sure if used on tractors) they actually want some inductance in the HV secondary which those wires afford......

Voltage is your problem. The more voltage your coil is putting out, the more interference you will cause. Shielded wires and resistor plugs will help, if that still doesn't do the trick you may want to see if you can shield the coil.

If all else fails, and you need to run a generator with your tractor, look into a Faraday cage. Basically a grounded copper mesh enclosure, this will contain all of the EM interference.

PS if you ever want to disrupt all computers, radio, tv, etc, build a reasonable size Tesla coil. I had some friends that inadvertantly over powered a nearby radio antenna with theirs. They got a nice warning from the FCC once they figured out what was causing the problem.

Your gonna have to shut it down to change all your wires.I guess you could suggest other "activities" since television is out?See how that strikes her

Isn't there a noise filter that can be wired into the tractor . I remember when i was kid that when a car/truck got a cb that a filter had to be used. "R.F" ?

Obviously the wire and plug advice is good, but I think Marty may be on to something. My SA (that I have for sale on photo ads - I added that was for Dave :))knocks the voice off my over the air digital tv.
The sa has all new wires and a new larger coil than original. That may be why it starts intantly.
My 300U's with original equipment do not affect the tv.
I am going to try isolating, or filtering, the SA coil and see what happens.
Most independent electronic supply stores have a wide range of filters.
I have never been happy with Radio Shacks selection of filters.
You might try an auto parts or auto dealership parts dept. also.

Dellbertt - Filters may or may not help. I would guess not. Its the magnetic field generated when bumping up the voltage in the coil.

I don't know if coils are internally shielded or not, but if they are it could be that the shielding is cracked or degraded.

Marty,
Good thinking. If so, what would be a good shield to wrap the coil in to test your theory. Aluminum foil? Wire mess?
Thanks,
Dell

A steel can on a coil will do all but the top of the coil/tower. The radiative component is (needs to be) like an antenna. Plug and coil wires fil that definition. Try those first.
Primary circuits do have "hash" in them, but it usually is confined to spikes of a few hundred volts. These do no harm to electrical things like lights and generator/regulator systems. but affect (on board radios and electronics through supply voltage, not radio transmission. JimN

I have a car radio that works strong and clear with key in "accessary" postion but as soon as I turn the key to the "on" position (without starting engine) it knocks the stations off with interference. So if I filter the supply line to the radio that should stop the ignition line noise interfernce OR do I need to shroud the coil.
