Correct Tyres for Super BM

Can any of the British readers of this great website tell me what tyres Doncaster used on the 1954 Farmall Super BM? Who was the manufacturer and are they still making these tyres today?

I don't know about the Farmall SBM in England, but the Farmall B-450's we sold in the Memphis District came equipped with 15.5 x 38 R-1 rear tires. I would GUESS that 13.6, 14.9. and 15.5 were all available in England on both the F SBM and the F B450.

Hi Harold,
The SBM I am restoring has old Dunlop 13.6 X 38 tyres on it, they are not original. That suggests your recommendation is spot on, thank you. I was looking at how dificult it would be to restore the tractor to ex factory condition and none of my manuals tell ne what tyres the tractor had as original specification. Thank you for your advice.

Don, the manuals don't specify because tire brand and style was subject to change. Tires came from the manufacturer who could provide the best deal at the time, and could actually provide the tires. Any of several different brands and styles could be fitted.

Any tire that was being produced in the 1950s, though, has been out of production for decades. The most prudent course of action here would be to use tires that could considered to be "period correct."

The oldest tire style currently in production that I know of is the Firestone Field & Road, which has been around since the 1960's. You would see these on American Hs and Ms as replacements when the tractors were still "front line" working machines. They're a 23 degree straight lug, though.

The Field and Road was not out at the time of the SBM. The correct tread would be 45 degree angle lugs.

Right. Like I said, it's only been out since the 1960s.

It would be a "correct" replacement for a 1950's tractor whose original tires wore out.
