What causes my IH 464 3 pt. to not stay raised unless I hold the lift arm up? The hydraulics that operate the loader work fine.

I don't know the 464, but on the earlier series (240, 340, 460, etc) there is a check valve right at the hitch that keeps it in the position it is set in case there is a slight leak due to wear in the control valve to the hitch. I had to rebuild the check valve on my 340 with new orings because the hitch wouldn't stay inposition. You might see if your system is similar. Lot easier to fix the check valve than the control valve.

Hi, it's like a 454. Check at the hitch contol lever pivot, it have a friction disk, loose the jam nut a re-tight the disk until the lever stay by itself. Bernard le mecano Quebec Canada

This bring back lots of memories, years ago, like when 706 was first introduced, customer would come in telling me his hitch will not stay up. After much questioning and explaining to him that if hitch was leaking down it would repeatedly correct itself (hicup) if the tractor was running, we would finally get to the actual problem, the positon control lever itself was merely returning to the lowering position and needed to have the friction on lever increased. From your description of the problem you are having , it sounds like this is what you mean. Some one else already addressed that issue also.
