It's supposed to be the radiator end, but it really doesn't matter on a 4-cylinder engine. Either one will work as long as you set the timing at TDC on the compression stroke.
 
If the plug wires were poked into the distributor cap because that was assumed as #1 and the rotor was pointing there it would be wrong (opinion) jim
 
Plug wires on the cap should be in this order provided No1 piston near the radiator was at TDC
on the compression stroke when they were installed. Hal
