400 vs. 450 rear end

Some advice will be appreciated. I have a 450 that has a "broken" rear housing right where the tranny fluid drain plug is located. It was a patch-job that I missed when I bought her about 6 years ago, and now she cracked open on me. The only way to fix her is to replace the housing. I have seen more beat-up 400"s around and am wondering if they have the same size housing as the 450. I am guessing they do, but would like extra verification. Any pointers on dissambling the back end would also be helpful! Thanks in advance.

400-450 rear frames carry the same part number which is a revision of the SMTA part. All will work. I am guessing that 560-660 will also work but it carries a different part number. Probably has something to do with bearings and the hydraulic fluid pickup. I have installed 560 internals into a SMTA rear frame.

As for tips, it is not that difficult. Make sure you remove the bull gears before removing the pinion gear bearing cage.

I have a center section from a 400 with the transmission still attached. I am in northern Wisconsin. If we are close enough, you can have it cheap. I was going to keep it for the transmission only.

If it is not a restoration piece (even if it was maybe) I would take it to a good welder before going through all that hassle. Obviously you didn't show us a picture of the problem, but a good welder can repair cast. Don't go to one that uses nickel rod or thinks they need to preheat...they are working with 20 year old technology. There are two rods out there that get the job done. Super Missle Rod is the second one, but I don't remember the name of the first (and better) one.
Having just done most of this project this summer I would avoid it if possible. BTW REMOVE BULL GEARS FIRST!!!
