no not really at all. they have less then 40 draw bar horse. 2 16's will be a good work for 504 in heavy soil.

It will handle ok untill you drop them down and they go in the ground. I guess one thing also depends on how deep and if you are in sandy soil. I had a 504 diesel back in the mid 1970's and pulled a set of 2-16's John Deere plow in 2nd gear. In clay soil it did not want anymore and also pulled a 8 ft disc. Tryed to pull a 10 ft with it but just not enough there. At that time I also had a Super MD. It would out pull the 504 easily. The super MD pulled 3-14's most of the time in 3rd gear.

Gotta agree, even a good regular M would show it's backside to a 504- one of the quys who worked on & off for my gramps that had the IH dealership bought a pair of 504's, they were more comfortable to run and such than the old M, and the same 4-row sidemount cultivators/ bean pullers that fit our 706's also fit the 504's, but pulling 3-16's in good loam was all they wanted

NEighbor had a 504 Diesel with 14.9x 38s loaded with a tric ft. and he would Shell we say Borrow my 540 4 x14's semi mounts and with a 1000 on the ft and second gear stick ahead he would do a good job of it , hed had 3x14's three points and with my 540's he could cover more ground

neighbor back home had one years ago, always said that a 504 was"to big too be a small tractor, and to small too be a big tractor" he said the only things that tractor was sized for was baling and corn planting

The 504 was "advertised" as a 3-plow tractor. I think the SM was a 4-plow tractor. Advertised meaning, good soil 4, tough soil 2. I have a 504 diesel and it is a little gutless wonder and easy on fuel (d-188). I have pulled a 10' disk with it and it will out bale a JD 3010 diesel on a Vermeer 504 baler. I think it is the heavier flywheel. I like my little 504 but think 4 bottoms drafting deep will create some slippage... Tires only, the clutch will choke it down before it slips!

Specs are: 48 hp PTO, 42 hp DRAWBAR.
