Got a 706 that won't stay running, replaced the plugs, wires, rotor, distro cap, cleaned the carburator, air filter and ensured the solenoid works fine on the carb. Runs excellent at an idle but once you give it gas it backfires, hesitates and dies, can't get it out of Low 1/2 (which is flying!) thought my main jet was plugged but it is not. What am I missing, thought of putting a new set of points/condensor in it but they aren't corroded or pitted and they are set at .020 like the book calls for, and I seem to have good spark. Any suggestions would help, thanks in advance.

might check your air filter and the fuel strainer at the carb. Timing might be off a little, if so just losen the nuts at the distributor and turn it a little

Ok on a 706 gasser make dead sure that you have full stream flow from the tank to the carb . Next make sure that the ing. timing is set dead on for the engine you have as a C263 sets different then a C291 , next make sure that you are using 93 octane fuel ONLY . Next all The gassers are really cold blooded and will need the use of the choke till they warm up . Also the heat riser in the exhaust manifold must work.

Not sure if this will help you; I had a similar problem with an international 400 gas. I fretted over a lot of things, electrical, timing, plugs, etc. It would start fine, idle no problem, but as soon as I pushed it to make it work it would sputter, cough, miss, etc. Turns out that there was a small chip of wood in the tank that got sucked into the bottom, just above the sediment bowl. I assume it came off a stick that I (or the previous owner) used to check the level of gas in the tank (a common practice). The flow of fuel seemed fine but that small chip of wood would bounce around and restrict the flow just enough when the tractor"s demand was high to make it sound like there was a major problem. Hope this is all that is troubling your machine.

FIGURED IT OUT FINALLY! The Springs in the bottom of the distributor had some gunk in them, cleaned it up retimed it and she is purring like a kitten. Thank you all for the help, I also found a treasure inside the gas tank, don't know if it was cloggin but it won't have the chance anymore.
