Seems like I might have a little problem and not sure if or how to correct the problem, I purchased a Farmall Cub yesterday, would not start with out a little push, any way when I got home, done s little checking , it seems that the negative post is hot and the poitive post is negative, is this normal or did the former owner charge it uo in reverse, if so can I discharge it and charge it the other way?

Most 6 volt systems in the 40s & 50s were Positive Ground. When charging always connect Positive charger lead to Positive battery post.

Whenever charging or for that matter jumping a battery from one vehicle to another,
ALWAYS CONNECT POSITIVE TO POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TO NEGATIVE.
It does not matter which terminal is grounded.
Now, for your question.
As was posted it is normal for your tractor to be a positve ground system.
I would recommend you disconnect the battery from the system by disconnecting the positve ground wire and charge the battery overnight using an automatic charger.
Then make sure all connections are clean and secure and you should be good to go. (If all parts are operational)

Thanks for the reply fellows, I forgot to mention that I completely discharged the battery last nite, Ok I went down a few minutes ago put my battery charger on. pos on pos,neg on neg and the needle on my battery charge keeps jumping from the top of the scale to the bottom, and I do have it set on 6 volt. is the batt no good?

The battery may or may not be good. Insure theres electrolyte above all the plates (and none exhibit a gray or milky off color) and let it try n charge for a while as it may take some time BUT THAT DEPENDS A LOT ON YOUR CHARGER AND ITS CAPABILITIES.

Perhaps the charger is circuit breaker equipped and she may be pulling too many amps so she trips but then re sets.

Other times depending on the charger she may not draw many charging amps for a good while but then finally start to charge.

Other times there may indeed be a battery short so she tries to draw more amps then the charger can supply and it trips out and she will NEVER CHARGE

Many auto supply houses will check a battery for free including a load test if she ever takes a charge that is??

Heres my Troubleshooting Procedure for non charging

Sure do appreciate all the great information, should mention that when it comes to electrical problems on these old tractors I am just a bit lax, any way I am going down to my garage and put another batt charger on ,maybe my K-mart charger can,t do the job, will post back later ,thanks again

Well,a big sigh of relief, well I went down and put on my other charger , this one puts out 10 amps ,the other one only 6 amps, guess the larger one makes a difference, any way its now charging,I thought for a while there last nite I was going to have to but a new batt, this one is only a couple months old, like I said at the beginning just got this cub yesterday, so I,m sure as time goes along when I start working on it will have a lot more questions so I will know where to turn to,thanks again to K-Mo, John T, Dellbertt and any one else that may reply, you made my day, thanks again John from N.B.
