how do you tell a md block apart from a super md block? the tag says sm but no D for diesel thanks

look right above the injector pump (actually right above the plunger to be exact) there will be a flat machined surface there. on there will be a serial number and engine model. if it is a super md it will say D-264 if it is a md it will have FDBKM. you can also look for the date codes in this case a super will only have X = 52 Y = 53. this is found rigght under the block drain plug oon the left side also.

If you think it might be a gasser block, there are a lot of blatant differences, including 5 main bearings instead of 3.

For the diesel itself, they are almost identical throughout the series, and a later block can easily be used in place of the earlier one. That block, like so much of IH, is an evolutionary series, with new items added over the years (like bolt holes) but very few removed. If the serial number on the block is after about 25000, piece of cake to swap. Probably the earlier ones too, but harder to say and I don't have a Super MD parts book.
