Minor rust in Farmall 450 Fuel tank

KN ; Yeah, go to your friendly Harley-Davidson dealer and ask for the rust gunk to clean out a tank ! Stuff works like a charm, though it does take three or four "cleanings" on your valve and fuel jar to get her clean !
Hey, worked for me !!
Cheers !

Jim, Thanks for the reply - Is this something that I have to remove the tank to do or does it run through the system ?

I just did the tank on a Super M. Started with a tank that was sitting exposed for years without a cap. It appeared heavily rusted with big flakes inside on the floor. I got as much dry flakes out as I could to start with. Then rinsed it with water. Put in a gallon of muriatic acid straight. Let it sit on all six inside surfaces for 2-3 hours each. Then fill with water and let sit another couple days. Drain and flush with clean water. Put in an 8 oz bottle of phosphoric acid or metal prep right away. Slosh onto all surfaces. Fill with water and let sit for a couple hours. Drain and let air dry for a couple days before either coating the tank with a sealer or filling with gas.

This process seemed difficult but was very easy. The results were excellent as the inside of my tanks looks like new. It is hard to believe it came out this nice.

I had a similar problem with my 400 diesel. There was enough rust in the tank to clog the fuel filters and starve fuel to the engine.
I took a doughnut magnet (from the pan of an automotive transmission), tied a 2-foot piece of baling wire to it, and dropped it in the tank. I went for a drive in my neighbors bumpy field for five minutes and pulled the magnet to clean. After repeating about 10 times, I found that no rust was stuck to the magnet. I haven't had a problem since then.
