400 TA and clutch problems

Hello everyone I have a neighbor that has a 400 that when the tractor is parked on an incline it is hard to shift gears. I tried adjusting the linkages and that didn't help plus the linkages were at the limits for adjusting. Finally I took the inspection cover off the TA, nothing looked too out of place, but what should I be looking for as far as damaged parts. Thank you for any help.

might be right in the shifter it will get wore out and try to engage 2 shift rails at the same time . take the 3 bolts out and check the pin out. had that problem last year.

If I remember right ours was always that way and my 560 is that way now. I have found that if you reach down and pull the TA back it comes right out of gear. That is not the correct way to do it I'm sure but it gets you out of a jam. ;)

Well, here is the deal, the ta has an overrunning one way clutch , there fore the direct drive clutch (high range, lever ahead) must be released so tractor can roll back to relieve gear train wind up. In other words, when you push clutch pedal in the ta clutch should release the same amount as pulling the ta lever if everything is adjusted correctly, provided that the ta works. Some times the fingers get so worn out and or a pin comes out or part way out of the ta 7 inch clutch that it will not down shift into ta and therefore will not roll back so you cannot relieve gear wind up, thus hard to get out of gear when it needs to roll back . Drive up an incline, push in clutch and tractor needs to roll back. OK.

When you run out of adjustment, the clutch disks are worn out and need to be replaced. Both the main clutch and the TA clutch can be replaced with a single split of the tractor at the bell housing.

mkirsch is probably on target. Worn pins and clevice pin holes are also contributory to adjustment. If it pulls without slipping in direct and TA, I would look to the linkage and adjustment by the book first. JimN

Thanks guys for the help, I did forget to mention that pulling the TA back doesn't help, and that there is a slight vibration felt when the ta lever is pulled back. I am going to look at the TA on my 450 to see if there are any worn parts. again thank you

If you get a vibration or pulsation when pulling lever back, I am sure your ta clutch is worn so bad fingers are bottoming out.
