Just got this 1943 Farmall H. It does run but needs a great deal of attention. I do have the correct hubs/rims to put on it but i an needing to replace the front rims. I am also needing a grill, did not come with one when i bought it. This is my first tractor and my first restoration attempt. I have been a car mechanic all my life but this is all new to me.

Here's your pics. Hal

(quoted from post at 18:14:01 11/11/09) Mike CA. There's your wheels. Check out the manifold.

Gordo

I will not be using the wheels that are on it now. I have the original wheels i will be putting on soon. These wheels and the hydraulic belly pump are for sale. Yes, the manifold is trash. I need a new one.

nice find!!! good project there. dont toss out the exhaust/intake manifold. that is for the kerosene/distillate engine, getting hard to find. your distributor is a delco remy, it was a common replacement when switching from a magneto ignition. still has the lift cylinders with it too!!!! gonna need to get that tractor driver there an i-h cap and t-shirt to be official!!

Great looking H! Where do you live? We can help find parts.

What is your goal with it? Restore it the way it is for a working tractor? Pretty it up a little? Or do a full on, down to the bolt correct restoration?

Your manifold IS NOT TRASH! Don't toss that one. If you want to replace it, you can put a regular gas manifold on it... but that distillate manifold can be salvaged. They are a lot of work, but I'll take it if you are going to trash it.

Ahh, another first time H restorer. It's good to have company. :D

Thanks guys for the info on the manifold. Do i get the carb kit for the distilite or the gas? I guess i could get this one blasted and repaired. My intentions with the tractor are for show/parades only. Once i get it running (needs tune up/ carb kit) i will tear it all the way down and go back with new paint, seals, gaskets and tires.

LOL, yes, i will have to get that boy of mine a IH cap real soon. I thought i would never get him off of it.

Mike, I live in Longview, Texas, I am 125 miles east of Dallas on I-20. Any help finding a grill & 2 front rims would be appreciated. I am also looking for a belly pan cover since i will be removing the hydraulics i will need a cover. I will have the pump, cylinders and fittings for sale cheap or i will do some trading for a good grill and the front rims.
Thanks
Zack

first Don't trash that manifold...

Parts should not be that hard to find. I keep running across guys in your neck of the woods selling H's, parts and equipment. Tyler area I think. It is a good drive for me, I am 20 miles South of Waco. Haven't found anything to entice me to make the trip. Just keep an eye out in the local papers and craigslist. I am sure you will find what you need.

If not I have a few extra H's and a few parts so if you get stuck drop me a line.

Ken

CVA,

If you aren't going to return the H to a distillate tractor, then you can get a new gas manifold easily enough. It will run the tractor smoother. A good distillate manifold is important for guys who are trying to return their tractors to an original state.

You mentioned early that you had the "original" wheels. I'd guess that the wheels on it right now are the originals, cut to fit rims with rubber added. A '43 H is a "war tractor", like my '44 H. I'm guessing that your shifter is cast iron, vise hard rubber? If you had a grill, the Farmall emblem would be tin, if it's original.

Anyway, it's all not that important if you are just making a good running H that looks good. That actually makes things easier for you, as you don't have to sweat small details, and just worry about things like tearing down the whole tractor and replacing all the seals. :D

Oh, and for the best carb kit, I like to get them from Loren (RustyFarmall). He sells the most complete kit I've seen, and at very reasonable price.

Can anyone please tell me how to remove the governor shaft from the carb so i can rebuild it??? :?

I'm assuming you have already removed the air hose and the fuel line. What you see is the cover for the shaft. The shaft is just pressure fit in there. So, remove the screws that hold it on, and remove the bolts that hold the carb to the manifold. Then you can work the carb off the shaft with a gentle twisting motion.

Ok, I will try that but it feels like it is stuck and i didn't want to break it. I will gently work a screwdriver between the flange and carb and see if i can work it loose.

What kind of a deal would you do on 2 of those rims? I also have to sell or trade the wheels that are on the tractor now to someone. I have no use for them and my wife will fuss at me if i have a bunch of tractor parts laying around outside.

I am also still looking for a good grill and i would trade someone this manifold for a good gas manifold if anyone is interested.

I would look for a tractor salvage yards in your area. That's where I got a lot of my stuff.

If you just want to get it running, that manifold will work fine. But if the opportunity arises to trade, that's fine.

Jason, The pm's in here are down and i don't see your email. Please email me at [email protected]. I am very interested in your parts.
Thanks,
Zack

Is this something i should me concerned about before i start restoring this tractor? It doesn't appear to be leaking. I just discovered this yesterday, it was covered with dirt.
Thanks
Zack

Where is it? It's zoomed too close to be able to tell.

"concerned" depends on you. It looks like a shade tree fix. Lots of welding, and the addition of a non-stock plug bolt. If it works, and you don't mind the way it looks, then it's of no concern in my opinion. But since it's a show tractor, you may want to take some time on it. Get a bolt that doesn't stick out so far and take a grinder to those weld beads before you paint it.

If someone was doing an original restoration, they've probably have to replace the rear end. But you don't have to go to that extreme.

It is right under the belt pulley PTO down on the side of the transmission case. I will get a bolt that is the right length. I would be hesitant to grind on those welds too much since they are brass. It would take quite a bit to get them smoothed up and clean. I was thinking of building a nice can type cover that would cover just the area of weld and use the bolt to hold it in place. I am afraid this has dampened my aspirations of having a real nice 100% original tractor without going to extensive lengths to replace the case and a couple of other imperfections. I do not have the place or time or money to get into completely changing out cases and big pieces like this. I will fix it up as best i can i hope it turns out looking ok.
