Are all Super A's geared this high

I have been driving my 300U's for many years and used to the gear speeds. Everytime I get on this SA I cannot get over how fast the dang thing goes in reverse. Even in first and second it seems like I am going like crazy. When I back into the barn is when I really feel it.
Are they all this way or were there options on the gear ratio.

I have a Super A that runs 20 mph with ease! The motor is only running 2000rpm.
Yes the front end is good and tight. It has automovtive style tie rod ends.

Sounds like you need to set up the governor and set the idle speed to what it is supposed to be.

There were no options on the gear ratio. What is the size of the rear tires? Most were sold with 9 or 10-24 4 ply, "new" equivalent is 9.5 or 11.2. Mine has 11.2 4 plies, I don't consider reverse particularly fast, although its faster than 1st. 1st is too fast for the load when I am mowing in heavy grass and weeds, have to take half swaths sometime. Reverse is 2 7/8 mph, 1st 2 3/8, 2nd 3 5/8, 3rd 4 7/8, 4th 10. Likely 9.5 inch tires. Your governor could be set too high, also. I control reverse with the clutch in tight places. Reverse in the 300U with 11.2's is 2.4.

Good luck, IH was somewhat conservative, but the governor is supposed to be set at 1400. Same engine in the C is 1650.

That is PTO speed.
1540 is the high idle speed for the A and B and 1818 for the C ans Super C.
The same engine is used in power units and the are Gov'd at 2500 so I am not to worried. The engine has been rebuilt with new sleeves and pistons, valves and bearings. So its all good!

Your numbers are no-load, 10% higher than the running rated max that CNKS is quoting. 1400/1540 and 1650/1815n load/no load.

Unfortunetly I have decided to sell the SA and keep the Cub with the woods 59 mower. When I was looking around on photo ads I found an A that said it had the "creeper gear", that's what brought this up. I can't find the ad but I am going to keep looking.
The engine on this SA runs smooth and doesn't seem to be idling too fast and the gov is working. BUT, I do have about 8 notches left on the throttle when the engine cuts of. I set it to the lowest idle speed and then when I go one more notch it cuts off. How hard is it too set the gov. I will get a photo of the carb today. (It's a 1951 SA)

No such thing as a creeper gear for an A that I am aware of.

You need to time the governor to the carb, and adjust the idle stop screw.

Tractor off, disconnect the linkage from the carburetor to the governor rockshaft at the front by the generator.

Push the throttle to full forward.

Adjust the linkage longer or shorter so that you can put the pin back in easily with the carburetor wide open.

Once that is done, go back to the carb and adjust the idle stop screw so the engine will not shut off when you move the lever to the first notch. The idle stop is the one on the arm that the throttle linkage you just adjusted connects to.

That was easy. It idles smooth and quiet now on the first throttle notch.
I can't believe how easy this thing starts. I no more than hit the starter and it's running. I guess I should put the mower on this one and sell the cub. Although the cub runs terrific too. Oh well, they're not taken up and space in need in the barn so we'll just wait and see what happens.
Thanks for the help.

I probably should have said to set the gov at high idle, Scotty has the right numbers. Under load, though, you are not running at high idle, but somewhere between the two numbers.

This is true and I am about 20% over actually.
Granted I don't run it like this all the time. Just when needed to prove a point or a tractor pull.
And I still have adjustment on the gov screw!
