Lube for front wheels?

When I pulled the replacement hub off a '39 H it had grease in it. I just pulled the cap off the adjustable hubs I got with the front bolster from a salvage yard a couple years ago. Oil came out of that hub!

Oil seems wrong. Should I use grease? I'm replacing the front wheels and putting new bearing kits in both wheels to start freash for them. The manuals don't mention how or what to lube the bearings with (that I could find). So if it is grease, will a general purpose grease work?

I use wheel bearing grease but some of the tubes of grease say you can use it for wheel bearings.
I would think it would be OK because you are not driving 50mph.
Just make sure you get the bearing packed real good!

there used to be a brg. grease, but yes i am sure any good quality grease is fine,as they are just slow turning.you get to try your hand at brg. packing now.

That probably was NOT oil that ran. Instead, it was very old grease that has seperated. Just pop on down to any auto parts store or even your local Wal-Mart and get a container of "wheel bearing" grease.

Excuse me for using the "classic" version. It seems that the modern version is overloaded at this time of day.

I guess my next question should be: How do I pack wheel bearings? I'm assuming I just stuff as much grease as I can in there?

There is a particular technique to packing wheel bearings. Just "stuffing it in there" is not good enough. If anyone has a video showing the proper technique, maybe you could post a link to it?

you need to do it manually if you dont have a brg. packer. you take a small gob of grease in the palm of one hand and hold the brg with the other. then press the brg into the grease and pull it towards you.you will see the grease work its way through the rollers and out the top. keep turning a bit till you have the whole thing done.forgot to mention that first is to wash all that old grease out with varsol and dry them clean and check condition of brg.

Yes, and even brand new bearings have a protective film that needs to be thoroughly cleaned off.
