Super A Cut out vs. regulator question

I have read so much and am good and confused now. I have a Super A with gen with a cutout not a voltage regulator. I need to replace it. Can I just use a 6v. regulator by itself or do I need a regulator conversion kit I have seen to go with the VR. Can someone recommend a part number for the correct regulator to use. Thanks

All you need is a compatible (with genny) 6 volt Voltage Regulator suitable for your Positive Ground tractor (assuming its as original and you keep it Pos ground as I recommend). The new VR must EITHER BE suitable for Pos Ground (if youre at Pos ground) orrrrrrrrrr suitable for BOTH Pos or Neg. THERES NO OTHER CONVERSION KIT NEEDED.............

In the event you have an adjustable 3 brush genny, Id set it for max charge........

DO NOT (remove it) use the wire that used to run from the LHBD switch down to the Gennys FLD post.

Wire

BAT on VR up to Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter. That can be same wire that used to run from BAT on Cutout Relay up to ammeter

FLD on VR to gennys FLD post DONT run wire from FLD on Genny up to LHBD light switch)

ARM/GEN on VR to Gennys ARM post

THE NEW VR NEEDS A GOOD CASE/FRAME GROUND

POLARIZE THE GENNY BEFORE STARTING

If you use a 4 terminal VR post back for slightly different wiring or consult Bob M's Wiring Diagrams

Bob M and I recently had several e mail discussions about a new VR he purchased (and all its problems despite being NEW) , Id ask him but in the meantime check with my old friend Jim Guarino at Agri Services in New York at www.wiringharnesses.com. He has them for sale and can advise you what works where. Tell him Ol John T says hi

Not sure about the 850, can't find a spec sheet. As John T recommended, go to wiringharness.com and hit the parts catalog. Page 7 shows the IH basics and page 34 shows the regulator selection in a plain manner. 6v or 12v, curved or straight mount, cutout or regulated. The 6v units are listed as positive ground and should bolt right up. I'm guessing that you probably want the curved mount to go on the generator.

If you want to keep your switch original, get a cutout unit. Otherwise get a regulated one and move the generator field wire from the main switch to the regulator F terminal.

Prices listed are very reasonable.

By the way, all units have cutout. It disconnects the battery when the genny stops putting out. This is required for all generators or else they will discharge the battery rather quickly.

The regulator type also has a F terminal to automatically feed the field input on the generator. This means you don't have to do it your self via the switch. If you only have the cutout, you must operate the switch to charge your battery.

You should get the Delco Remy # off the generator so you can get the regulator made to replace the cutout as some parts book do have listings for the different generators.

I have seen regulators that say they can replace the cutout if the regulator conversion kit is used. I have seen the kit they talk about but is it required? Or will I be fine if I wire it how Bob says to.
