M.D --- Mag. Distributor

Two Questions. 1. Is the mag on an M.D The same as the regular Ms? And can the mag. on an MD be replaced with a distributor and coil? 2. And if it can will a distributor off a regular M work on it. Or does it need to be one off an MD. I know the MD engine turns opposite.

The engine turns CW the Mag/dist turns CCW this makes them totally incompatible. Parts might interchange, but advance and impulse couplings do not work backwards. JimN

Jim, Did some of the later MDs come with the distributor set up? The Mag I now have is out and I would much rather go to the distributor set up if it is possible?

The M distributor drive turns counter clockwise, opposite to the M, so you can't use a distributor or mag from an M. If it was me, I'd get the mag rebuilt and use it. If you change to battery ignition, the switch that works with the gas/diesel change over lever will not work. It's set up to ground the mag and shut off the spark when in diesel position. If you have the mag rebuilt, it will likely cost no more than changing over to battery ignition and you'll likely never have to do anything to it again.

Yes My 48 MD had a distributor. as did many newer Gas start diesel run engines including the 450D JimN
