okay this really good deal (at least for Here in CT) has come up for a non running farmall C, he wants under 1000 for it so the price is in the right range and it doesnt seem to be in bad condition according to the pic i have. He said it is not stuck.

just to double check what i should be looking for, Check the oil, check the anti freeze, check the engine for visable cracks ( i dont have a compression guage) I dont have a jump pack so i wont be able to turn it over any faster than by hand

Check steering check brakes check for missing parts

Is there anyhting else? anything typicall of a C?

Buying ANYTHING new or used is a roll of the dice, you just try to do the best you can. I don't look for tractors to buy but over the years I have bought a few.

I was mowing a blueberry patch for a guy and I saw a Super H sitting in a leanto portion of his barn with junk sitting all over it. I offered him 300, he took it and we pulled it to my farm.

The sediment bowl was packed with a grey solid material that looked like lead ( and it probably was now that I think about it) and when I pulled the pan, out dropped a couple connecting rod bolts. Short story, I fixed both those items and new plugs and it started on the first crank and ran great for a long time till I sold it.

Just a roll of the dice,

Dell

I know that feeling. :-P

At the cost of tires these days I would almost rather roll the dice and go for a machine with a questionable engine and good tires then a tractor with a good engine with bad tires.

You can get the engine home and it might surprise you, you get the tires home and they're never going to be any better then the day you bought them.

I guess that applies more to old gas tractors but still it's something to think about.

I would still try to get him under 1k though.

looks pretty good in the picture, but not running i wouldnt pay more then 600 for it tops. theres alot of questions with a non running engine. if the guy is set in his price either walk away or you could say give me a few hours and see if i can get it running and then go from there. if you cant get it running in a hour or two then its not worth a grand. one just sold down the road from me for 1200 last week near new tires and full weights. just be careful to throw down the bills.

Good luck

Andrew

Rub the points with some 320 wet or dry. Put in a little fresh gas and see if it will start. Hal
PS: If it has battery ignition you will need a fully charged battery.

I would offer less money since its not running. Check the tires to see if they need replacing.
Hal
