Hi I am helping a friend with his 574 , it started making bad knocking noises this summer so we pulled the pan (kinda expected a bad bearing but didn't find one) what i did find is it appears to be leaking water around the sleeves (does it have wet sleeves ) Now i kinda wonder about a blown head gasket (water in the cyl) ?? what do ya think. thanks mike

yes it has wet sleeves. if you replace the sleeves get the hi-compression pistons. it well start a whole lot better. and if you have to change the cam bushing you well have to get them lined bored as last time i did one they dont come pre fit to cam. so in less they are bad i wouldn't change them.

Hi, the "O" rings at bottom of sleeves are leaking. Common problem on the older German built Diesel engines, especially if they have been over heated. The "O" ring will shrink when the weather is cold and leak more.
