engine oil sludge

I changed the oil the other day on my B Farmall and noticed a lot of sludge is there a good way to clean/burn that out without taking the motor apart or clogging up some parts in the motor?

take off the oil pan and clean out the sludge and deposits. all you have to get is a new pan gasket or a tube or rtv.

I will suggest removing the oil pan, clean it thoroughly, and re-install. A new gasket for the oil pan will cost you around $10 or less. Refill with fresh motor oil, but you might want to replace 1 quart of oil with 1 quart of "Rislone". Run and use the tractor for awhile and then change the oil and filter again. You might need to do several oil and filter changes, but eventually the sludge will be cleaned out. I think some of the guys are now using "sea foam" instead of the "Rislone"

The lion's share of the sludge will be lying on the bottom of the pan. Drop the pan to clean it out. Also check and clean the oil pump pickup screen while the pan's off.

There will be a lesser amount of sludge under the valve cover and perhaps behind the tappet cover (magneto side of the block). You should remove both covers and clean out anything you find there too.

When you are finished give the head good final flush with clean solvent (kero, diesel, etc) then blow with compressed air to make sure all oil drain passages are clear.

Button the engine back up (use new gaskets!) and it should be good to go.

What are you running in this engine for oil? Detergent or Non-detergent. Detergent oil will clean the inside of the engine. Old non-detergent oil will not clean sludge out of the engine.

My local Napa can get the gasket.

Victor brand I think.

If cork I would coat both sides with indian head shellac and it will never leak. Will be a pain to clean up if you ever change it again though.

I use "coppercoat" but only on the oil pan side of the gasket. That way, the next time the pan is off, you can just set it up your work bench and scrape that gasket off, or hold it up to the wire wheel on your bench grinder which makes short work of cleaning off a gasket.

As stated previously, on your next oil change (and filter), substitute 1 quart of oil with 1 quart of Rislone. Run it for awhile, preferably work it. Get it up to operating temp a couple of times. When I say run it for awhile, I ususally put 5-10 hours on a tractor that I just bought using the Rislone treatment. Change oil and filter. Rislone is one of the few oil products that I believe works.

As always: IMHO.
