I've got one, can I pull just that one stud out without pulling the entire head?

What motor ? Some motors bolts go thru the water jackets.

I"m guessing it might be a flat head . Anyway use teflon pipe dope on the bolt and put it back in.

I have two cubs that the bolts go thru the water jackets and i use pipe sealent on the bolts when the heads were put back on.

It's an H. And that's what I wanted to do, just didn't know if it was ok to pull one stud and not take the entire head off.

If fluid is comeing up the stud, you must have a head gasket leaking. Try tightening the nut first. If it stops leaking, you got lucky. If not you will need to pull it.

Don't the head studs open down into the block/water jacket area?

Some do, some don't. If this is one that does, drain your system down enough so that the coolant doesn't siphon back up through weh you remove it, and put it back with some thread sealer.
