Protection Under the Battery

I bought a Super H from a neighbor last week. It is in overall good condition except the battery box under the seat was corroded over 3/4 of the way around the bottom. By corroded, think a 1-inch strip of metal was missing on 3 of the 4 sides. There was a layer of rust and corrosion at least an inch thick under the battery. After I got the old box off I found the platform to be extremely pitted.

My question is what can I coat the platform with or lay down to keep it from pitting any worse? Is there anything to put underneath the battery to protect the new box?

Get one of those marine battery boxes they sell for baot batteries. Toss the lid, and cut it down to desired height.

I filled the pitting with JB Weld, sanded, and then smoothed with body filler--4 years ago. A lot of sanding. Just clean the box occasionally.

Look for a product called "Battery Mat". I've seen it at some truck restoration places and plan I putting it in my box on my H. It looks like a very heavy felt like material and you just cut it to fit. I don't exactly know the science behind the product but the material basically neautralizes the acid that would leak from the battery as it's absorbed into the material. I've know of a lot of guys to use it on cars and trucks they've restored so I sure as heck won't hesitate to use it on my tractor. I know for sure you can get it through LMC but I've never checked to see if any autopart stores carry it

I used to smear plain old grease on all of my old car battery trays and sit the battery right on top of it. Never had one rust any worse than it was when I got the car.

Used to use a rubberized paint in the Military, but you could prolly just use a generous coat of rustoleum. Wash everything with a generous baking soda solution before painting. Cut a piece of 1/4" plywood to put under the battery to soak up any juices, and lay a penny or 2 on top of the battery to draw corrosion. Wash or replace the pennies as necessary.

Don't roll your eyes on the penny thing til you try it.

Simply replace the battery box with a new one and have it sprayed with line-x truck bed liner (inside) before installing.

I have been looking around and asking about battery mats for YEARS! Nobody had ever heard of them.
